Intuition: The Voice
#28 in the Series: Daddy, It's Me--Conversations of an Ordinary Person
with an Extraordinary Heavenly Father
Have you
ever been in a situation where suddenly you knew you should not be there and
have changed course, not knowing what you might have avoided, but having peace
that you saved yourself some grief! Or…perhaps it went the other
way. You got that feeling, but pressed on and suffered for the
decision.
In the
fall of 2016, my husband and I set off on a trail ride on the North Fork John
Day River.
The
trail started out pleasant enough with a wide pathway lined by river
rock. We crossed a tributary and the path began to follow that
river. Soon the trail was very narrow…a horse width wide...the edge
of which was often very close to the steep bank of the stream with drop-offs
ten to fifty feet down. Since I was following Dave and our good
horse, Treasure, I did not think a lot of it at first. We came to a
muddy spot on the trail and my horse, JoyFull, insisted on trying to climb
above it…not like her. A little further down, another muddy spot and
again she tried to climb the much steeper hill above it. What was
she thinking?
We
came to a boulder field. Fortunately, the trail was wider here but
the rocks which made up the trail ranged from baseball to soccer ball
sized. With every step the horses slipped, slid, and
stumbled. JoyFull was not paying enough attention to her feet.
To make matters worse she was hurrying because she wanted to stay close to
Treasure. I breathed a sigh of relief once we were through the boulder
field but the trail continued very narrow and now not only had the drop off on
the river side, but also a very steep bank on the uphill side. As I
watched Treasure ahead of us, her hind foot stepped off the edge on the river
side. She quickly saved herself and Dave. I don’t know if
Dave perceived it, but it made me even more nervous since JoyFull still was not
thinking about her feet. I started wondering if this was a good idea
and a voice inside confirmed in the negative.
After
half an hour we came upon an abandoned miner’s cabin. We dismounted
to take a look. When I went to get back on JoyFull, instead of standing
as usual, she strained to turn around on the narrow trail, turning sharply up
the steep side of the hill and making it very difficult for me to get
on. Finally, I gave in to my intuition and the voice and told Dave I
had a bad feeling about the ride. We turned around and made our way
back to camp. Thankfully the ride back was uneventful.
I don’t
know what would have happened if we had continued on the ride, but I feel that
voice inside me kept us from danger or some other unsavory experience.
“Whether you turn to the right
or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the
way; walk in it.””
Isaiah 30:21 NIV
The Holy
Spirit guides us through that inner voice…His voice.
(He) ”is able to keep you from
stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and
with great joy—”
Jude 1:24 NIV
If you
have never made Jesus the Lord of your life, I implore you, do it
today. (See “Mountains Made Low”) Then ask the Father for the Holy
Spirit. The Father will give him to you and you will find new
protection and freedom for your mustang heart.
“If you then, though you are
evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your
Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!””
Luke 11:13 NIV
