Treasure Hunt: Numbers in the Night
#25 in the Series: Daddy, It's Me--Conversations of an Ordinary Person with an Extraordinary Heavenly Father
A few years ago I was visiting my older brother. He told me of a way that God spoke to him sometimes through numbers on license plates. Yes, really!
He would be out driving and notice the numbers on a plate and could not get them out of his mind. Sometimes he would also get an impression about the name of a book in the Bible like Psalms, Isaiah or Jeremiah. Then he would go look up those numbers in the Bible. Often the verse would really speak to him. For example he might see 236 and look up the 2nd chapter and the 36th verse or the 23rd chapter and the 6th verse. If that verse did not exist or did not “speak” he would look at other books.
For me, I have not noticed this so much with license plates but instead it is times on a clock, especially at night. I will get up sometime during the night and notice the time on the clock. If it seems significant I will ask Father God to remind me in the morning. If I remember it in the morning I go looking for a verse that speaks to me…I call this treasure hunting!
There have been times I have looked up the numbers in every book in the Bible. Not long ago I discovered I could do this quickly in the YouVersion app by simply typing the numbers in the search bar using the protocol—chapter:verse. So 2:59am would be 2:59 (there are not many chapters with 59 verses) or 25:9…there are not many books with 25 chapters. The search engine prints a list of all the chapters with that number that have that verse. It is amazing how often the first or second listing jumps off the page.
I got to wondering if this was something that could be supported biblically. This is what I found:
“The way you counsel and correct me makes me praise you more, for your whispers in the night give me wisdom, showing me what to do next.”
Psalms 16:7 TPT
“Throughout the night I think of you, dear God; I treasure your every word to me.”
Psalms 119:55 TPT
“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.”
Psalm 63:6 NIV
“But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:”
2 Samuel 7:4 NIV
“In the night, Lord, I remember your name, that I may keep your law.”
Psalm 119:55 NIV
So, though this is unconventional, I think it is biblically sound.
This is something that seems to happen in seasons for me. It may happen for several days or weeks in a row then not again for weeks or months. When it does it is very encouraging.
Take note when numbers jump out to you…maybe from license plates, maybe from clock faces, maybe from signs or receipts or…? Maybe God wants to send you on a treasure hunt and use it to free your mustang heart!
