Call It Intuition??
#27 in the Series: Daddy, It's Me--Conversations of an Ordinary Person
with an Extraordinary Heavenly Father
Some years ago, I
was taking a horsemanship class with my mentor.
During the course I had a strange, disastrous session with my high level
horse, Promise.
I had been out on the
playground presenting her with interesting challenges. She amazed me with her ability to almost read
my mind. If I had a clear idea in my own
mind what I wanted her to do, she would try it and it would usually be right or
very close. The more things she did
successfully the more my imagination ran wild and I kept asking for more and
more difficult maneuvers. Looking back I
was being soooo human….soooo greedy!
Finally we headed
back toward her corral and I just could not resist asking for one more
thing. She apparently had had it with my
lack of relationship because instead of her usual compliant effort, she kicked
out and made contact with both my hands.
She could have just as easily made contact with my head or body, but she
intentional got me in both hands. I
ended up going to the ER, but nothing was physically broken.
I was however,
emotionally devastated because of the stark contrast between the emotional high
I was on from the huge “success” of the session and my inability to understand
why she would respond that way. It took
several days and some counseling from my mentor to discover that a big part of
the problem was that I was not listening to her prior to the event. I was so caught up with either dreaming up a
new request or glowing in the accomplishment of the previous one that I missed
the subtle signs that she had other “more important” thoughts on her mind…being
she is a creature of the moment…the now…the present.
This event has kept
me thinking—meditating—chewing on an important, easy to miss, concept. Other
situations and events have brought it around again and again so that it has
stayed in the forefront of my thinking off and on for all these years. That concept is the idea of being present
and, recently, it’s connection to intuition.
What is intuition if
not being led by something inside us…the Spirit! (If we are God’s children, we are led by the
Holy Spirit.)
“For those who are led by the
Spirit of God are the children of God.”
Romans 8:14 NIV
What I finally
discovered (very recently) is that a big key to being led by the Holy Spirit,
my intuition (which isn’t me at all but is the Spirit) is being present or mindful! When I am present and mindful, I will make
decisions that are God led. One of the
most powerful ways to be present and mindful in the Spirit is to pray…OUT LOUD! When I’m present simultaneously in mind,
body, and Spirit the devil doesn’t stand a chance of leading me off into
unproductive thoughts like depression or unforgiveness or illness or self pity
or fear or any other path except the one I follow holding Father’s hand!
Being present is a
skill that is learned! It is like a
muscle that becomes stronger and stronger as it is used. As we learn to be mindful and present, our
intuition becomes more accurate, detailed, and automatic! As we improve in our ability to be present
and mindful of the Holy Spirit he can do what Jesus promised he would do.
“But when he, the Spirit of
truth, comes, he
will guide you into all the truth. He
will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is
yet to come.”
John 16:13 NIV
This may be the most
important concept the Lord has ever shared with me. I feel it is barely being
grasped with my extended finger tips. I pray Holy Spirit will help me and you
fully grasp it and draw it into our hearts, our whole beings!!!
“May God himself, the God of
peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body
be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is
faithful, and he will do it.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NIV
Only God
can do all this and free our mustang hearts!
