Final Thoughts:
Write It Down
#49 in the Series: Daddy, It's
Me--Conversations of an Ordinary Person with an Extraordinary Heavenly Father
I have mentioned
several times in the course of our journey so far the suggestion that you
journal and write down what you sense God is speaking
or revealing to you. We have talked about how He speaks through - His Word revealing Himself, His ways, and His purposes, teaching, convicting and encouraging you and giving you a standard to which everything in life can be compared.
- His World, how nature reveals God’s character and His ways and can even remind us of scripture that teaches, convicts or encourages us. It often gives us the W.O.W effect…WONDER OF WONDERS.
- His Winks—those intimate moments when you know that you know that you know that He has touch you in a real and personal way.
- His Ways—Some of these may be unusual, inconsistent, or rare and there may be ways I have not mentioned, but when He uses one of these, again your spirit leaps in recognition of his voice. Some people call this an inner knowing.
Sometimes it is hard
to place an experience in a category because it fits in several. That’s ok!
It is not about categorizing the experience, it is about recognizing it
as a communication from your loving Heavenly Father!
But back to
journaling…keeping a record…writing it down.
There are numerous scriptural commands to do this. Take a look at these!
““This is what the Lord, the God
of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.”
Jeremiah 30:2 NIV
“Go now, write it on a tablet
for them, inscribe it on a scroll, that for the days to come it may be an
everlasting witness.”
Isaiah 30:8 NIV
“Then the Lord replied: “Write
down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with
it.”
Habakkuk 2:2 NIV
“At the Lord’s direction, Moses
kept a written record of their progress. These are the stages of their march,
identified by the different places where they stopped along the way.”
Numbers 33:2 NLT
“Then the Lord said to Moses,
“Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua
hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under
heaven.””
Exodus 17:14 NIV
““Take a scroll and write on it
all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other
nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now.”
Jeremiah 36:2 NIV
“Let this be written for a
future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord:”
Psalm 102:18 NIV
That is a lot of commands to
write! It seems that keeping a record of
the Lord’s communication is something He wants us to do. So how to get started?
- Decide whether you want to hand write or type. I have done both and greatly prefer handwriting but I am learning to appreciate the ease with which I can transcribe scripture by using the copy feature in my Bible app. Having my words in electronic form also enables me to easily search topics or words I have written about.
- Acquire/gather your tools. I think a beautiful journal encourages the journey. Gallery Leather sells several sizes of leather and faux leather journals with gold guided edges that are gorgeous. These are what I used when I was handwriting, but any notebook will work. Now I use my iPad. Since space is such a premium as we travel, it is working for me. I currently use the app called OneNote. It is connected to my OneDrive so I can access entries on multiple devices. You may not need that. There are many journaling apps available in the App Store or Google Play.
- Pick a time when you will read the Word and write. Having a consistent time will help you build a strong habit for success.
- Record the date. When you return to your entry in the future this will be especially meaningful. (I also record the place and time.)
- Before you read, pray…asking Holy Spirit, who is your teacher, to reveal to you the things you need to know.
- If you have trouble knowing what to write look back at some of the early blogs for ideas or just pray: Lord what do you want me to understand, learn, or apply as a result of reading this? Then be quiet and aware. What comes to mind? Write it down. Compare it to the Truth of the Word. Thank Him for it!
At first, you may
only write a sentence or two. That’s
ok. Just start. Sentences often lead to questions…write those
down. Sometimes He answers those
questions…if so write that down.
Sometimes you may just wonder…write that down. It is very interesting where a passage can
take you when you give Holy Spirit permission and invitation to direct your
thoughts and teach you.
This will become a
valuable record of your spiritual journey and another stepping stone to freeing
your mustang heart.
