22 An Example

    An Example
#22 in the Series:  My Daddy Is…

I found this beautiful definition of “example” at dictionary.com:

“a person or thing regarded in terms of their fitness to be imitated or the likelihood of their being imitated”

We have many examples in our lives: parents, teachers, co-workers, supervisors, employers, sport’s heroes, people successful in their field, pastors, leaders in business or
politics.  Sometimes children are our example.  Even animals or other things in the natural realm can be our example.  Sometimes, what we see is a bad example and we know what NOT to copy.

Our Heavenly Father is our best example.  If we are copying his nature and character we know we will be obeying every law.  (Galatians 5:22-23). Not only that, but as we become more like Christ we are also walking in his will for our lives.  (Romans 8:28-29)

Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you now about how God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) is your example.

“Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:32-33-11:1NIV‬‬

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
    ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:1-2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Ephesians Chapters 4-6 give many other instructions and details of what following God’s example entails.

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭13:14-15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.”
    ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:19-21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

    1. Now…pray and ask Holy Spirit to highlight something from this post and to teach you. (Perhaps he already highlighted something as you were reading!). Close your eyes and be silent before him for a minute or two...or more.  Breathe in Holy Spirit.  (Yes, actually inhale.)  Listen.  Open your eyes and peruse the post.  What does your eye see or your ear hear?  Write it in your journal.

    1. Why does it seem important?  You could even ask:  Father/Jesus/Holy Spirit, why have you brought this to my attention?  Write the answer in your journal.  (The answer may be a question…an I wonder.  Allow Holy Spirit to direct your thoughts.)

    1. Make it a prayer.  Pray the scripture (and it’s insights, questions, or comments) back to the Father.  Write this in your journal.

    1. How are you going to be different after this experience with God?  What does he want you to be or do as a result?  If you are not sure, ask him.  Write this in your journal.

I look forward to this journey with you!  Onward to freedom for your mustang heart!
